Did You Know This About Waterjetting?

If you’re new to the concept of waterjetting it can be a little confusing. Let’s face it, how one earth do you create unique shapes and specialist parts using water pressure alone. How does it work?

Waterjets are pressurised units of water forced through tiny holes on jetting equipment at anywhere up to 60,000 psi. They can be mixed with abrasive materials and when the water and the media come into contact with surface areas, it cuts them and shapes them to make unique parts and intricate products.

What types of materials do they cut?

Pressurised water can be used to cut a host of materials including stone, metals and softer materials. Mixed with abrasive media, they cut through copper, brass and hardened steel with ease. Without abrasive materials, they can be used to precisely slice through more delicate materials such as glass, ceramics, leather and foam.

Benefits of waterjetting 

Easy to set up and use - Offering the flexibility to cut through a number of materials is just one of the advantages of waterjetting systems. They are very easy to set up and simple to programme. Working in conjunction with the latest CAD technology, you can instruct a waterjet machine to cut complex parts to exact tolerances. 

Quick and precise – Cutting with a waterjet head is a speedy process. Once programmed, parts are produced with the minimum timescale to millimetre perfect specifications.

Heatless – Hardly any heat is produced when you use a waterjet machine so this is a very safe method of cutting and shaping materials. This also means there is no hardening on the surface area and it doesn’t warp, thus reducing the need for recasting. 

Very little kerf produced – Waste is kept down to the minimum thanks to efficient waterjet streams. Hardly any material is removed during the cutting action, so there’s less waste, meaning you can machine more parts from the same piece of material.
