Picking the Perfect Sandblasting Media

With so much sandblasting media available, it’s easy to become a little confused when you are choosing the perfect medium to clean and prepare a surface area. Depending on the type of surface you are hoping to clean, different types of media might be suitable. Think about the surface you are going to clean and follow these instructions if you have any doubts or concerns.

Use a gentle sandblasting media

Always start off with a gentle sandblasting medium if you have any doubts. Glass beads, for example, are very useful for general cleaning and the light removal of foreign matter, giving good results without over-stressing the material.  Grass grit is also practical and offers a gentle finish. It’s particularly good for the removal of surface coatings and provides a cleaner finish.

Give plastic a chance

If you are looking for a high stripping rate and want to prepare surfaces such as car panels without causing any damage, plastic abrasives could be the perfect solution. They are popular with vehicle restorers and deliver brilliant results for the removal of anti-corrosion coatings and surface paints. Plastic also offers lower dust levels, is fully recyclable, and is a sensible alternative to chemical stripping.

Get aggressive with steel grit

Steel grit sandblasting materials are some of the hardest available and perfect for aggressive cleaning on metal surfaces. Often used by ship builders and pipeline manufacturers, steel grit has a rapid and effective action when used with compressed air systems. For total surface preparation of metal areas, steel grit is tough to beat and very effective.
