5 Things You Never Knew About Garnet

Garnet is just one of the many blasting abrasives we supply here at Blastrite. It’s a natural mineral abrasive and consists of sub-angular particles that are mined from alluvial resources. Garnet is available in various colours including purple, orange, pink and other shades, but red is the most common colour. It is usually amber-like, but can also take on many different hues depending on the type and variety that is mined.


Red garnet was commonly used as a gemstone during the Roman times, and pure crystal varieties of garnet are still classed as gemstones today.    


There are many uses for garnet, including blast cleaning on a variety of surfaces. It is commonly used for water jet cutting and is known for its lower dust emissions compared to other blasting abrasives. 


There are many advantages to using garnet as a blast abrasive. It produces a uniform matte finish, is a fast cutting and stripping abrasive, and can be disposed of as non-hazardous waste in refuse sites.


Garnet is also environmentally friendly and can be recycled without any loss of performance up to five times. This makes it a useful material, and also means there are lower shipping, handling and disposal costs involved when you use it as a blasting material.
